Our after school program provides a series of surmountable challenges and steps in overcoming them through the Merit Badge System. Squires plan their own advancement and progress at their own pace as they meet each challenge. Sometimes, these challenges requires teamwork among the squires themselves. Squires are recognized and rewarded for each achievement, which helps them gain self-confidence. The steps in the Merit Badge System helps a Squire grow in self-reliance and in the ability to help others. Attaining the badges is simply a means to an end, and not an end in itself. It is one of several teaching methods designed to help each child become confidant, self-aware, and learn empathy.
The key to our program is using experimental learning – which is designed to educate and expand a child’s horizons. Squires learn and develop their own code of conduct and ethics as they progress. Through our exciting and meaningful activities, learning happens while having fun. Learning comes from hands on approach in trial and error and reflecting on what worked and what didn’t work. It is important to remember that attaining a badge, as with any milestone in life, is not the end goal, but rather a series of continual learning and growing of skills to be used in life. Developing your child’s personal growth is our goal.
You can learn about creative strategies, out-of-the-box solutions, project planning, teamwork, business development, science, crafts, and potential future career opportunities as you earn merit badges. Any Game Kastle Squire or Knight may earn any of these at any time.
Pick a Subject. Talk to your High Chapter Master about your interests. Read the requirement of the merit badge or badges that you think might interest you and then pick one to earn. Your leader will give you the names of other Chapter Masters who have special knowledge in their merit badge subjects and would be more than happy in helping you. Some badges may require that you include another fellow squire or more to attain.
Squire Buddy System. You MUST have another person with you at each meeting with the Merit Badge Chapter Master. This person can be your parent, or legal guardian, or another adult 18+ years old.
Meeting the Merit Badge Chapter Master. Get a signed application for the Merit Badge and get in touch with the Merit Badge Chapter Master and explain that you want to earn that badge. You should discus work that you have already started or possibly completed while the Chapter Master may explain what is expected and guide you what needs to be done to meet the requirements.
Unless otherwise specified, work on a requirement can be started at any time. Ask your Chapter Master to help you learn the things you need to know or do. If you get stuck, they are more than happy to help you overcome your challenges. You should read the Game Kastle Squires Handbook on the subject. You may even need to do some research online, in a bookstore, or even the library. Some badges may require that you record your progress and ask you to keep a journal of your progress.
Show Your Stuff. When you are ready, call or e-mail your Chapter Master again to make an appointment. When you go, take along the things that you have made to meet the requirements. The Chapter Master will test you on each requirement to make sure you know your stuff.
Receive your Badge. When the Chapter Master is satisfied that you have met each requirement, he or she will sign your application. Give the signed application to your High Chapter Master so your merit badge can be secured for you. Merit badge requirements are revised as needed to reflect changes in information, rules, and technology. Refer to the latest Game Kastle Squires Handbook for merit badge requirement updates.
